Valentijns Tea-Dance met herdenking voor David Kato

WISH vzw heeft op 13 februari een valentijnsfeest gepland, “WISH To Be Special” een teadance van 14h. tot 21h. voor holebi- en transgender asielzoekers van over gans België. Tijdens deze teadance is er ook een herdenkingsplechtigheid voorzien voor de Oegandese mensenrechtenactivist David Kato.

In samenwerking met Fedasil (AHHA), Rainbows United (Merhaba, Rainowhouse, The Belgian Pride,WISH, AHHA) en met steun van Het Roze Huis Antwerpen was gepland om voor deze doelgroep, - die hun seksualiteit vaak in de anonimiteit van een groot asielcentrum of een Lokaal Opvanginitiatief, waar ze niet ge-out zijn, moeten beleven, - een valentijnsfeest aan te bieden. We verwachten 120 holebi- en
transgender asielzoekers uit alle hoeken van het land, en van minstens 20 diverse nationaliteiten.
De moord op David Kato heeft ons ertoe aangezet het feest, wat het nog steeds zal zijn, te beginnen met een herdenkingsplechtigheid. Iedereen wordt van harte uitgenodigd aan deze plechtigheid deel te nemen en op die manier de aanwezige holebi- en transasielzoekers een hart onder de riem te steken. Deze doelgroep is slachtoffer van dezelfde mechanismen die tot de moord op David Kato geleid hebben, en als holebi-of transvluchteling hebben velen onder hen geen echte familie om samen dit soort van pijnlijke evenementen te verwerken.

Om aan de noden en behoeften van de doelgroep holebi-asielzoekers tegemoet te komen wordt het korte maar krachtige muzikale afscheidsplechtigheid om 14h30, waarna we het valentijnsfeest laten doorgaan. De Gentse Jazz Diva “Sabijn” en een gerenommeerde Oegandese Jazz pianist zullen een sterk muzikaal signaal geven en David Kato alle eer aan doen. Zij stellen zich ook met al hun talent garant om daarna het feest terug op gang te trekken. Vanaf 17h. tot 21h. neemt een Afrikaanse DJ en enkele bandjes over.Tijdens de herdenkingsplechtigheid wordt iedereen geconfronteerd met de plaats die voor altijd leeg zal blijven. De stoel van David zal op vele fora en plaatsen voor altijd leeg blijven, maar zijn nalatenschap zullen we in ere houden. David heeft veel gereisd en bracht zijn boodschap tot in alle uithoeken, met die erfenis moeten wij verder werken. Onvermoeibaarheid en inhoud kenmerkten hem, littekens merkten hem. Overal waar David Kato LGBTI-rechten op de agenda heeft geplaatst, moeten mensen met zijn nalatenschap aan de slag, ook hier in Vlaanderen, In België en in Europa.

Madrid: Congress on Islam and Homosexuality (Battal)

Quite frankly I have to say that it was kind of a weird experience. Coming from Malta and in the end organising my own travel to Madrid whilst the organisation did promise to do so for me. Well, that was quite hectic and I will probably be haunted for the rest of my life by the trauma flying with Ryanair caused. But at least we made it there alive and the turbulence didn’t kill us.

As for the Congress; it was an interesting experience as I have never ever participated in an activity that was solemnly based on the topic of Islam and Homosexuality. Therefor I was extremely happy with amount of ‘International’ guest who could speak on behalf of muslim LGBTQ persons. It was refreshing to hear them speak about the problems but also the opportunities they face in their home countries when addressing the topic. But I must also say that I really disliked and even regretted the organisers, nearly ever present, imperialistic and very paternalistic approach of the topic; like the speech the president of Colega gave or the speech one of the spokespersons op the Spanish PP gave. The undertone of their speeches was nearly threatening for me personally as I do not believe that using force is the way to go to emancipate Mulsim LGBTQ persons in their home countries. But it was fortunately only a minor disturbing thingy in regard to the whole congress.

When it comes to the participation of Merhaba and me to the congress, I must say that I’m quite happy as we have now a lot of contacts with other European and International NGO’s working on the topic. This can only strenghten our network. Also our contribution to the round table on Muslim LGBTQ migrants in Europe was quite good as I think that we have made a few points clear. Like the difficult issue of “Coming Out” and the issue of inclusion of the bigger migrant community to come to a true emancipation of migrant LGBTQ’s. And I can say I’m glad for that.

So I’m definatly up for another congress on this topic. Maybe the one during the Outgames in Copenhagen next year?
