Campagne: Je weet waar discriminatie begint…


Organisaties van etnisch-culturele minderheden en interculturele organisaties lanceren campagne tegen racisme én homofobie.

Vandaag geven verschillende organisaties van etnisch-culturele minderheden en interculturele organisaties de aftrap van een nieuwe affichecampagne tegen racisme én homofobie, tegen elke vorm van discriminatie en voor diversiteit. Ze geven aan en erkennen dat er problemen zijn en daar willen ze op reageren. Alle deelnemende partners hebben hun specifieke achterban. Samen bundelen ze de krachten om de strijd tegen élke vorm van discriminatie aan te gaan. ‘Je weet waar discriminatie begint maar niet waar het eindigt’.

‘Allochtonen zijn geen homofoob blok. Tegelijkertijd sturen we een niet mis te verstane boodschap de wereld in: Wij tolereren geen enkele vorm van discriminatie. We pikken noch discriminatie op basis van religie, afkomst, gender of seksuele oriëntatie, noch enige andere vorm van discriminatie’ zegt Said van Merhaba, de beweging van holebi’s en transgenders uit etnisch-culturele minderheden.

De affiche toont discriminerende labels die ons voor een gesloten deur laten staan. ‘Ons land bestaat niet uit homogene groepen. Je bent niet of homo of iemand met een andere huidskleur en ook niet alleen maar vrouw. Identiteiten zijn complex en onze samenleving is divers. Hier is geen plaats voor hokjesdenken, kwetsende opmerkingen of geweld. Immers, we zijn maar vrij en gelijk als “de ander” dat ook is, als de deur naar de samenleving vrij is van discriminerende labels’.

De affiches worden verspreid in zowel hippe als wat heet ‘kwetsbare buurten’. In Molenbeek bij voorbeeld, is iedereen divers. Nochtans merk je dat polarisatie hand over hand toeneemt. Het is noodzakelijk om polarisatie vanuit gelijk welke hoek te ontkrachten. ‘Geen enkele vorm van discriminatie is minder erg dan een andere. Een discriminatie kan je zeker niet bestrijden met een andere’ besluit Sam. ’Je weet waar zoiets begint, maar niet waar het eindigt’.

De campagne is een initiatief van Merhaba (beweging van holebi’s en transgenders uit etnisch-culturele minderheden) met de steun van Kif Kif, het Minderhedenforum, de Federatie voor mondiale verenigingen (FMDO vzw), het Platform Allochtone Jeugdwerkingen (PAJ) en Ella (Kenniscentrum Gender en Etniciteit).

Sam “We zijn verheugd dat we voor deze campagne een breed draagvlak vonden. Dit wijst erop dat etnisch-culturele minderheden hun verantwoordelijkheid willen nemen in het maatschappelijk debat waarin mensen op basis van bepaalde kenmerken tegen elkaar uitgespeeld worden”.

De affichecampagne is vanaf deze week te zien in Brussel, nadien ook in Vlaanderen. Ze zal verschillende golven kennen en wordt al vanaf deze maand aangevuld met debatten en aanvullende projecten. Op vrijdagavond 8 juni organiseren we het debat “Homoseksualiteit bij allochtonen. Onbespreekbaar?” om 19u30 in het Atlasgebouw, Carnotstraat 110 in 2060 Antwerpen.

Met de steun van het Federaal Impulsfonds voor het Migrantenbeleid, de Vlaamse Overheid Cultuur, Jeugd, Sport en Media en ShortCut.

Mixed Kebab: gemengde gevoelens? Praat erover.

Guy Lee Thys schuwt de controverse niet. 10 jaar na Kassablanka, brengt de Antwerpse filmmaker een film over homoseksualiteit in een Turks-Antwerps gezin: Mixed Kebab. Net als bij Kassablanka veroorzaakt de film vóór de lancering heel wat opschudding. De première is voorzien op 23 februari in Kinepolis Antwerpen. Vanaf 29 februari verschijnt de film in de zalen.

Als organisatie van allochtone holebi's is Merhaba zeer benieuwd naar Mixed Kebab. Beantwoordt de film aan de gangbare clichés over homoseksualiteit in allochtone kringen? Is het verhaal herkenbaar? We zullen zien...

Voor ons is het belangrijk dat we eerst en vooral naar jou luisteren! Merhaba is zich bewust dat coming out niet noodzakelijk de juiste of enige oplossing is. Wij leggen de nadruk op coming in. Bij Merhaba kan je terecht als je jouw gevoelens wil delen met lotsgenoten en als je op zoek bent naar onderlinge steun.

Gloednieuwe website wil kennis over allochtone holebi’s bundelen

Vandaag lanceert Merhaba een gloednieuwe website www.merhaba.be die zich richt tot allochtone holebi's, transgenders, interseks personen & hun omgeving (familie, vrienden, …). Ook professionals en iedereen die vragen heeft rond gender, seksuele geaardheid en culturele diversiteit zal de nodige informatie vinden. Zo kan je regelmatig nieuwsupdates bekijken, onze campagnes volgen en voor wie meer wil is er een kenniscentrum met tal van artikels, getuigenisssen, interviews en dossiers.

Said Al Nasser :
"We wilden in de eerste plaats een interactieve website uitbouwen. Een plek waar allochtone holebi's en transgenders elkaar kunnen ontmoeten om gedachten en gevoelens uit te wisselen, en waar zij op eenvoudige manieren het onthaal van Merhaba kunnen bereiken. Op onze activiteiten zien we vooral een mannelijk publiek. We hopen dat we via de site allochtone lesbiennes en transgenders sneller en beter kunnen bereiken.

De site is aangepast aan de nieuwste ontwikkelingen in het internetlandschap. Je kan makkelijk artikels delen met vrienden via Facebook, Twitter en andere platforms en we zullen regelmatig dossiers plaatsen in het kenniscentrum. Je kan zelf ook interessante artikels aanreiken of een eigen stukje voorstellen via communicatie@merhaba.be. Een deel van de vooroordelen over holebi’s en transgender of homofobe uitspraken berusten vaak op onwetendheid en een gebrek aan informatie. Met deze site willen we ons steentje bijdragen om deze lacunes te verhelpen. ” ___________

In May 2010, Intersections International, an interfaith non-profit based in New York City, opened a one-on-one dialogue about the role the LGBT community has within Islam, with about 50 Muslim theologians, religious practitioners, academics and laypeople from U.S. cities with high populations of Muslims, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Dearborn, MI.

A group of six to twelve participants, with ages ranging from 19 to 68, met at each gathering. Half of those surveyed were American and half were natives of thirteen different foreign countries. The majority considered themselves politically moderate. The participants were given a 25-question survey asking them about their views of Islam, of LGBT issues and LGBT issues in Islam. The report also included three commissioned articles from Islamic studies scholars.

Reverend Robert Chase, founding Director of Intersections International, said that the request for the survey came from the Arcus Foundation.

“We wanted to heal the rift between the Muslim and the non-Muslim world,” Chase said. “What role is there for queer Muslims in the wider Muslim world or wider American society?”

Chase explained that one of the reasons that his organization was selected to preform the survey was because they didn’t have a “sectarian axe to grind.”

“The Muslims we reached out to were happy that we weren’t a Sunni, Shiite or secular foundation,” he said. “We were honest brokers looking for a thoughtful conversation. Because we were neutral, many people felt comfortable with us having this conversation.”

Many of those surveyed had more liberal views than expected. Although 65% said that religion was “very important” in their life, 78.9% said that the Qur’an is the word of God, but not everything should be taken literally; 94.9% said there is more than one way to interpret the teachings of Islam; and 54.2% agreed that gay and lesbian relationships should be accepted by society.

Those surveyed also appeared to be somewhat comfortable with the LGBT community: 86.4% knew someone who is gay or lesbian, 40.7% strongly disagreed that homosexuality was a sin, and 49.2% felt that it was very important for the American Muslim community to support gay and lesbian equality.

But at the same time, 44.1% could neither agree nor disagree that sexual orientation can be changed or whether sexual orientation was determined at birth. More than half (54.2%) found it very difficult it to have open discussions about gay and lesbian issues in the Muslim community.

The results matched a recent survey of American Muslims that found only about 45% of Muslims who think homosexuality should be discouraged. Although that number is greater than the general populace, it is more than 15% lower than it was in 2007.

One prevalent view is that the mosque is not a place begin these conversations.

“Mosques don’t open themselves to conversations about LGBT issues,” said one participant from Washington, D.C.

“The mosque is not conducive to the American Muslim community at this point. Youth are developing this discourse outside the mosque,” offered another.

Places where the dialogue could be had are those with a demographically younger audience, such as college campuses, Chase said.

Chase, who co-facilitated five of the six sessions, said he was surprised with the input from one of the first conversations he had.

“The person said there was real stirrings in the Muslim community – they are looking for new paradigms and new ways of thinking,” he recalled. “He said the Muslim community was globally on the brink of a breakthrough.”

Six months later, the Arab Spring began. “It was fascinating to hear about that almost as a prophetic voice,” Chase said.

Another thing that surprised Chase is the openness of the dialogue. He wishes the American public could have been able to experience the conversation.

“The dialogues were so deep, thoughtful, rich and compassionate,” he said. “Even though those involved covered a wide spectrum of thought, everything was said with a compassionate, inclusive view of this issue.”

Chase said he expected more resistance from such an overall conservative group of people. “They had deep empathy for one another and a desire to have a really thoughtful conversation.”

Chase added, “Here is a group that so many in American society wish to demonize and do demonize. What happened at these convenings is exactly the opposite of what those stereotypes are.”

Lastly, Chase said that if society can move from feeling fear to feeling empathy, then ignorance would give way to understanding. “As we get to know each other as human beings, we discover that we have so much more in common that what we do in terms of what separates us,” he said. “If we can honor the differences in one another and really get to know each other – or faith, culture or perspective life experience – than we can forge deeper bonds with one another and move towards a more tolerant world.”

Résumé :
A la fin des années 90 en France, l’ « American Queer Theory » a fait l’objet d’une traduction culturelle et politique dont l’objectif était de repolitiser ladite « French Theory » (Foucault, Derrida, Deleuze) post-structuraliste et si peu féministe de manière à introduire des politiques de l’identité post-identitaires dans une culture française dominée par un universalisme et un républicanisme allergiques au multiculturalisme ou aux politiques des différences. Dix ans après s’affirment en Europe des micropolitiques queer et des stratégies bio-politiques au niveau transnational qui contredisent les politiques de la vulnérabilité et de disempowerment promues par la théorie queer etats-unienne de la première vague. Nous reviendrons donc sur la théorie queer de la première vague considérée comme une technologie de genre à la fois ambivalente et dématérialisante pour la seconde Butler (Défaire le genre) et sur les nouvelles alliances théoriques et politiques queer qui, sur fond de nationalisme et d’homonationalisme sexuels galopants et de racisme anti-arabe visent à réarticuler une intersectionnalité qui est restée le voeu pieux d ela théorie queer états-unienne de la première vague.

Marie-Hélène Bourcier est activiste et théoricienne queer. Fondatrice du premier groupe queer en France, le Zoo. Elle est l’auteur de Queer Zones, Politique des identités sexuelles et des savoirs, Paris, Balland 2001, Amsterdam, 2007 et de Sexpolitiques, Paris, La Fabrique, 2005. Elle a également traduit Teresa de Lauretis et La Pensée Straight de Monique Wittig et publié de nombreux articles que les genres, les sexualités, la pornographie et la post-pornographie, les cultures et les politiques queers. Maria Laura Rodriguez Quiroga is een gekende Spaanse mensenrechtenactiviste, experte in hedendaags moslimfeminisme, voorzitster van de Unie voor moslimvrouwen in Spanje (UMME), coördinator van het moslimanetwerk « An-Nisa » en co-organisator van het jaarlijkse internationale congres over moslimfeminisme in Spanje. Ze is directeur van «Social Action», intercultureel consulente voor « Toren van Babel » en adviseert de Spaanse moslimfederatie wat betreft de gelijke vertegenwoordiging van vrouwen en mannen.

Muhsin HENDRICKS is een Islamgeleerde met een achtergrond in Klasssiek Arabisch en Islamitische studies, behaald aan de University of Islamic Studies, Karachi Pakistan (1990-1994). Azzah Hari heeft een opleiding als criminologe/juriste en arts. In de jaren ’90 was ze als jonge man actief in de strijd tegen AIDS in New York en Londen en in Nederland bij COC en Schorer. Op haar 28ste begon ze haar transitie. In de voorbije 10 jaar is ze als moslima actief bij de kennisbank homoseksualiteit van de Partij van de Arbeid in Nederland en bij Transvisie. Zij werkt op de psychiatrische afdeling van een ziekenhuis in Amsterdam en is consultente voor zowel islamitische transgender en interseks personen als voor overheden en mensenrechtenorganisaties.

Azza Sultan is een LGBTQI-, gender- en mensenrechtenactiviste die geboren werd en opgroeide in Soedan voor ze verhuisde naar de Verenigde Staten. Nadien vestigde ze zich in Egypte waar ze de organisatie Bedayaa oprichtte, samen met een groep van Egyptische en Soedanese activisten. Bedayaa is actief in de Nijlvalei (Egypte & Soedan) sinds juli 2010. Azza Sultan werkte met diverse organisaties en projecten die zich inzetten voor democratie, mensenrechten en vrouwenrechten.

Abdennur PRADO, voorzitter van de Junta islamica catalano, organiseert jaarlijks een conferentie over moslimfeminisme en organiseerde in 2010 een conferentie over islam en homoseksualiteit. Muhsin HENDRICKS , spécialiste de l'islam. Il a une formation en arabe classique et a suivi des études islamiques à l'Université de Karachi, au Pakistan (1990-1994). Il est le premier imam au monde à avoir assumé publiquement son homosexualité, il est fondateur de The Inner Circle et il est consultant en terme de diversité culturelle et sexuelle. Hendricks est un militant pour les droits de l’Homme spécialement pour les questions de genres et de diversité sexuelle en islam.

Azzah Hari, criminologue, juriste et médecin psychiatre, était activiste dans les années ‘90 à New York et Londres dans le mouvement de conscientisation au SIDA et au Pays-Bas au sein des organisations COC et Schorer. A ses 28 ans, elle commence sa transition. Les 10 dernières années, elle a été active comme femme musulmane pour la ‘base de connaissance homosexualité’ du partie travailliste (Partij van de Arbeid) au Pays Bas et auprès de Transvisie. Elle travaille au service psychiatrique d’un hôpital à Amsterdam et est consultante auprès aussi bien des personnes transgenres et intersexes, que des gouvernements et organismes des droits humains.

Azza Sultan est une activiste au sein de différents mouvements: LGBTQI, genre et droits de l'Homme. Elle est née et a grandi au Sudan avant d'immigrer aux Etats-Unis. Plus tard dans sa vie elle s’est installée en Egypte où elle a creé l’association LGBTQI Bedayaa avec d’autres activistes Egyptiens et Sudanais pour la région de la vallée du Nile (Egypte et Sudan). Bedayaa est une jeune organization créee le 14 juillet 2010. Maria Laura Rodriguez Quiroga is a well known activist, expert in contemporary muslim feminism in Spain, president of the Union of Muslim Women in Spain (UMME), coordinator of the muslim women network « An-Nisa » and co-organizer of the International Congress on Islamic Feminism. She is the director of « Social Action», Intercultural Consultant for « Tower of Babel » and is councilor for the equal representation of women and men within the Muslim Federation in Spain.

Muhsin HENDRICKSis an Islamic Scholar with a background in Classical Arabic and Islamic Studies obtained at the University of Islamic Studies, Karachi Pakistan (1990-1994). He is an Imam (religious leader) by profession and also a human rights activist focusing on gender and sexual diversity in Islam.

Azzah Hari , has an academic background in criminology/law and in medicines. In the '90s - being a young man - she was engaged in the battle against AIDS in New York and London and collaborated with COC and Schorer in the Netherlands. On her 28th she started her transition. In the past 10 years she volunteered as a muslim women and activist for the ‘knowledge base homosexuality’ of the Dutch Labour Party (Partij van de Arbeid) and at Transvisie. She is currently working at the psychiatric department of a hospital in Amsterdam and is consultant for Islamic transgender and intersex people as well as for governments and human rights organizations.

Azza Sultan is a Sudanese LGBTQI, gender, and human rights activist who was born and grew up in Sudan before she moved to the USA and then settled in Egypt where she started Bedayaa Organization for LGBTQI in the Nile Valley Area (Egypt & Sudan) which was founded on July 14th 2010 with other Egyptians and Sudanese activists. She worked in many associations and projects that support democracy and defend human rights and women's rights.

Op 10, 11, 12 december 2011 gaat de Internationale moslimconferentie "CALEM BRUSSELS 2011” door.



Merhaba organiseert deze conferentie rond het thema « Vrouwelijkheid, mannelijkheid, gender- en seksuele diversiteit : islam als een inclusieve cultuur, een spiritualiteit van universele vrede ». De conferentie wordt georganiseerd met hulp en advies van de holebi-en transgender moslimorganisatie The Inner Circle (Zuid-Afrika) en is in samenwerking met Bedayaa (Egypte-Soedan).

Op deze conferentie mogen we een aantal gerenommeerde internationale sprekers verwelkomen, waaronder:

We doen dit door van binnenuit en op opbouwende manier bijdragen tot het erkennen en bespreekbaar maken van diversiteit.

Le 10, 11 et 12 decembre 2011, Merhaba organise la conférence internationale "CALEM BRUSSELS 2011” sous le thème « Féminité, masculinité, diversité des genres et des sexualités : l’islam comme une culture inclusive, une spiritualité de paix universelle ». Cette conference est organisée en partenariat avec TIC ( The Inner Circle, Afrique du Sud ) et en collaboration avec Bedaya (Egypte- Soudan).

A cette conférence CALEM BRUSSELS 2011 participeront des intervenants de renommée internationale spécialistes en matière de diversité culturelle et sexuelle:

Amina Wadud (USA), professeur universitaire américaine, partisane d’un féminisme islamique. Elle a dit: « L’oppression des sexes est (…) contraire à l’islam et il incombe à ceux qui sont conscients de la complexité même de l’existence humaine de créer une réalité vivante qui défie l’oppression des sexes ou toute autre forme d’oppression fondée sur la race, la classe sociale, l’ethnie ou l’orientation sexuelle ». http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amina_Wadud

Muhsin Hendricks (Afrique du Sud), spécialiste de l'islam. Il a une formation en arabe classique et a suivi des études islamiques à l'Université des études islamiques de Karachi, au Pakistan (1990-1994). Il est le premier imam au monde à avoir assumé publiquement son homosexualité, il est fondateur de The Inner Circle et il est consultant en terme de diversité cultuelle et sexuelle.
